I arrived Tuesday evening late from Mexico. The trip to Vail seemed a lot longer this time even thought the wait time at the border was not very long. I had to stop at the Wal-Mart Pharmacy in Calexico for some refills on my medications even with calling ahead they didn’t have one of the refills and I didn’t want to wait till the next day to get it so I left for Yuma. In Yuma it was time to fill the gas tank and my tummy so I stopped at Denny’s. Yuma is not that big of a place but the pace is definitely faster than I’m used to in San Felipe. The traffic seemed heavy to me, I guess a lot of folks were shopping for thanksgiving and making sure they had enough of the traditional goodies.

After leaving Yuma I tummy gave me some problems and as usual Arizona still has many rest-stops closed so I had to keep a watchful eye out for a restaurant or gas station with “facilities”. I found two and felt better. I took a break at Date Land and walked around the store for a while and got some Gator Aide as I felt dehydrated. I think I got fed some caffeinated coffee and with the emergency pit stops I was behind in fluids. The trip from Date Land to Casa Grande was boring, but quiet. I stopped at a truck stop and yes another Denny’s for something to eat and to stretch my legs a bit. Then on to Tucson, the traffic through Tucson was lighter than normal but fast. I’m not used to driving fast anymore and it makes me nervous. I know in a few days I’ll be driving as fast as the others but it was night and just arriving I was a very watchful.

I got to the exit close to my house that has a Walmart and decided to get some fresh food to eat at the house. When walking from my truck into the store I got out of breath, seriously out of breath. I did a quick evaluation of myself and I had no pain just not enough air. I took my time and walked very slowly for while and then I recovered. I knew I better get checked out so made a mental note to call my doctor’s office in the morning.

Arrived at my house and found it all in good shape thanks to my DIL and son who look after the house for me. They even cleaned the house in anticipation of my return. I sure appreciate them doing that.

In the morning I called the doctor’s office and they got me in that day. After an exam and several tests and an x-ray the preliminary diagnoses is I have had an asthma attack and it may be caused by an allergy. I am now the proud own of an inhaler and taking Prednisone for a few days to help breathe better. It seems to be working, I only get shortness of breath once a day now.

I had Thanksgiving dinner with the family and it was lovely everyone got on just fine and there was a lot of catching up on events since I have been in Mexico. As usual my DIL cooking was a hit how she can work the hours she does and still whip out a holiday dinner for a big family is amazing. Black friday I went shopping, I know crazy eh? The stores, the ones I went to didn’t seem to be that busy and I got some stuff to decorate the house and started on my shopping list for the house in San Felipe. My to-do list while in the US is slowly getting whittled down, still lots of things to get done, yet I can see that it will almost all get accomplished.

I took a few photos, the one of the dinner table was without the family because when they all showed up I was too busy to take more photos. So, for your viewing enjoyment the photos are posted above.

Progress

I have been working on the house so far I have repaired and painted a guest bedroom, repaired the vinyl skirting so there are no more holes that animals can get through and I have planted two trees, and filled four big pots for flowers. It seems that everything takes longer than one expects and costs more too. I’m happy with the way the guest bedroom turned out as it had been a kid’s room and they had shall we say they “Issues”? I got the damage repaired and the walls needed priming then painting now the room looks nice and clean. All I need now is furniture for the room and it will be ready for guests. The skirting had holes in it from who knows what some were large enough for a small dog to go in and out. I replaced the skirting were needed and covered up the holes, the new skirting doesn’t match perfectly, but it doesn’t look bad either. I planted two more trees in front of the house for shade and found a site on-line that let’s me buy four trees a year at cost if I plant them on the West, South, or East side of the house. These trees are ordered and I will start digging holes for them later this week. Digging holes here is a challenge as the soil is hard-pan clay and rocks. I have to start a hole fill it with water and then wait till the soil softens then dig it out and do it again and again until I have the hole deep enough and wide enough for what ever I’m planting. Here are some photos of the house with the work I’ve done.

April Photos

This is what the place looks like in April 2014. A lot of work has been done and the place looks like someone lives here. Now to find a person or company to come in load all the brush, cactus and trash then haul it off to the dump. I have gotten an estimate of what it will cost to have new front and rear doors installed and it kind of takes my breath away. The Estimate is $1040.00. Being a cheap skate this figure has my head spinning. I’m going to give this a lot of thought before I commit.

At Home In Vail

I arrived a few days ago here in Vail AZ. I have been lucky that I had someone here working on the landscaping while I was in Mexico. With the removal of dead, overgrown and tangled plant material the place is looking better and better. I have been to a manufactured home parts store and priced out some of the things I would like to have replaced. The price of some items seems high to me, but I have no other source of parts. I did get a name of a man who does repair work on manufactured homes and I will call him and see what he has to say about where to buy replacement items.

The replacement items are the front and back doors both are in sad shape and are the cause of air leakage so the house is not being heated and cooled efficiently. Also there are parts of the skirting that need replacement as someone wasn’t careful about using a weed eater and cut holes into the vinyl skirting. Another project is to erect an awning on the East side of the house. This would shade the house so the morning sun doesn’t heat up that side of the house. In Arizona even the morning sun can be hot by eight or nine in the morning during our blistering summers. The temperatures can exceed 100 degrees for some of May all of June, July, August and part of September so shade is very important.

With the care the plants and trees are starting to bloom and some that looked like they might die are showing signs of life. This is a heartening sight as I know that no watering had been done a year or more prior to my buying this house. Now I’m thinking of what trees and plants I want to plant. I have purchased two climbing bushes for the front of the house and I’m thinking of buying a couple of trees to increase the shade of the front or West side of the house. Somehow I have to figure out a dependable drip watering system that will water while I’m gone on one of my trips.

Here are a couple of photos of some plants blooming here in the desert.

I will take more photos and post later.

At the same time I’m getting my RV ready for the sale lot in Tucson. I had no idea I had so much stuff in that RV. It has taken me hours and hours to clear out “stuff”. I still have the bins under the RV to clean out, I’ll tackle that problem tomorrow.

The Holidays In A Doublewide

What a silly title, holidays are no different in a double/single wide than in any other home. I didn’t get into the decorating mood until the christmas stuff went on sale! I just knew that lots of stuff for christmas was going to be 50% off right after christmas and I was right. I bought a $40.00 6.5 lighted christmas tree for $20.00 and all the decorations for it for less than $15.00! This will be next christmas’ decorations as the tree, of course, is artificial-i won’t have a real tree in the house it is to much of a fire hazard. Here are some photos of the tree and fireplace.

I’ll store all this holiday decoration stuff in the closet and it will be used next year with a few additions every year until I get bored with the whole idea. I got to spend christmas morning with the family for a family style breakfast and it was fun watching the kids grin from ear to ear and catch up on all the things the family was doing for the holidays. The menu was scrambled eggs, bacon, gravy and biscuits, cantaloupe melon lots of coffee and juice. I stayed until almost lunch and returned home to my MH and had  a late lunch with my sister that was delicious, she did the cooking bless her heart. The menu was roasted turkey breast, sweet potatoes, green peas, stuffing and gravy.

I have managed to buy a few things for the house; one end table, floor lamp, table lamp and a bedside table for my room. My favorite store is Goodwill and if you see it and want it get your hand on it right away stuff like furniture and lamps fly off the shelves. I have some work to do on the house so a trip to the big box store was in order where I got material and tools to make some minor repairs. It looks like this summer I’ll have to seriously consider painting the house. The joys of home ownership 😦

I have enjoyed the fireplace and it has been cold enough for a fire every evening. Sitting with my sister having an adult beverage talking about old times and new times has been fun. 😀
